Inspection at sale
The City of St. Louis requires a Certificate of Inspection (housing conservation inspection) before a vacant residential unit is occupied, and before an occupied structure is sold if none was issued in the last 12 months. The Building Division handles it; fees are $120 or $200 and the certificate is valid for 12 months.

Lafayette Square is a local historic district. In most cases, changes to building exteriors must be reviewed by the City's Cultural Resources Office for compliance with district standards, and larger projects may require Preservation Board review.
03
Per the neighborhood association, restrictions apply only to building exteriors: public-facing windows must be wood (not vinyl or aluminum), structures visible from the street must be brick, and fences must reflect historical styles and height limits.
04
The neighborhood association's Preservation Committee also reviews proposed construction and renovation projects and gives feedback; the City's Cultural Resources Office (314-657-3865) is the contact for project guidance.
05
The City publishes the Lafayette Square Historic District standards for rehabilitation and new construction, including revised standards effective February 21, 2019.
